That’s all very well and good, but I have something I need to do !
It’s 6 am and I'm ready for my work out. This weekend I have a time to beat, a race to win, an opponent to leave behind, and something to prove to myself. Time goes by. That’s normal. But for me time is more than just the hands on a clock, it is something I strive to improve upon each and every race. And tomorrow I’ll be better than today!
Well, it’s clear to me that to be at the top, you have to work a little bit. I eat asphalt, I swallow miles, I never let my body, relax too long, and I even wage war on it from time to time. There’s no room for half-measures. Oh, that reminds me.. I have a 3-hour session waiting for me !
Winning, surpassing myself, even at the price of suffering, that’s my thing ! There’s a lot of people who don’t understand this driving force, but it doesn’t matter, they’re not the kind of people you’ll see on the podium.
No, we’re not something from a science fiction movie !
It seems like a crazy way of doing things, but well... just think about it for a second : imagine a group of motivated people with the same clear objective : releasing a product together through co-creation with the belief that “together we can go further”. In front of them sits an incredible computer. The group of friends tell the computer about a product idea that has just popped into their heads with only the smallest of details : some characteristics and constraints of use, that’s it really ...
And this computer, with its hard disk full of algorithms, and an IQ which exceeds that of all the Nobel Prize winners combined, quickly draws up the plans and turns their ideas into reality. Artificial intelligence being used to support Design. Yes, it already exists ! Yet despite all this, mankind and womankind with its endless imagination, creativity and artistic genius remain indispensable to the process. That’s why Designers remain essential, the sense of emotion, the spark of a new idea, will remain forever theirs !
This is a bicycle fork.
Nope, it’s not our 2.0 interpretation of how Picasso might draw a bike. While the shape might seem impossible at first, thanks to the intervention of Artificial Intelligence and especially Autodesk Fusion 360, it actually is. This computer programme allows us to calculate the ideal shape according to the applied forces. We call it generative design because it is the software that generates the form, with specifications we give it.
From our very first try of the fork, we start coming up with a whole bunch of ideas for accessories, for example we ask ourselves.. What would the helmet look like if it were also calculated in the same way? In this game the sky's the limit, but what interests us most is the idea of customization. Imagine if we each had our very own algorithm?
Artificial Intelligence offers solutions, but it lacks the emotional connection a “Mate” has. It is a catalyst, a facilitator, but the fundamental work of the designer, and the emotion that links them to their “Mate” can’t be digitized, nor can it be taught to a machine. The designer remains the decision-maker, the creator, the interpreter of emotions.
Just because we use Artificial Intelligence and Computer Aided Design it doesn’t doesn’t mean we get to just sit back and relax. Quite the opposite, we’re the ones making the decisions, choosing which way to go, and setting the pace. It all starts with a sketch.
With the information we input the software offers us solutions. Technical solutions. Not necessarily aesthetic ones.
Once the objects have been modeled in 3D, we can move on to the physical materialization stage : in this case a 3D print using nylon powder. A first look at what this bicycle fork could look like.
From this first mock-up of the fork, we think up and decline a whole collection of accessories : Which helmet would go best with it? How can we keep the organic look while still ensuring the safety of our “Mate”? One possible solution, the Venom style.

Generative Design is a form of exploration in and of itself. It avoids interfering in the creation process of each “Mate”, but the nature of Advanced Design can be clearly seen here : it is an entity whose mission is to go where others simply do not have time to go, to take things a little bit further and push the boundaries of what is currently possible.
This is when our “Mates” can finally see a tangible glimpse of the solutions we have come up with for them. This is the moment of truth.
